An Evaluation of Specialty Training and the Broad Based Training Programme

Information Sheet for Trainees in Specialist Training

Please read this information sheet carefully before deciding whether or not to participate. You are welcome to ask questions about the study and your participation in it.

The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (AoMRCs) has commissioned Cardiff University to evaluate changes in specialty training. The evaluation will focus on the Broad Based Training (BBT) Programme which was introduced as a pilot in England in 2013. The principal aim is to evaluate the differences between the experiences of those on the BBT programme compared with those following a traditional programme. The project began in October 2013 and will continue for 2 years. GPST1's have been asked to participate because they are interested in your experiences of training.

For the full details and to complete the consent see the downloads on this page.

CLOSED FOR 2013 PILOT – There will be no recruitment to HEKSS programmes for BBT in 2014

You will initially need to apply to BBT via the GP National Recruitment website at using an electronic application form.

In the GP application form, there will be a section to complete if you wish to apply for a BBT programme. This section will include specific questions relating to BBT and will be used as part of a longlisting process.

If you are successful at the longlisting stage you then undertake an MCQ known as Stage 2 and if successful in this are invited to the GP selection centre (Stage 3).

You will need to be successful at each stage of the GP selection process in order to be invited to Stage 4, the BBT selection centre, where you will be interviewed by panels comprising the other three specialties, CMT, Paediatrics and Psychiatry.

The North Western Deanery are coordinating recruitment to all BBT posts across England and will be running a centralised Stage 4 selection centre on behalf of all deaneries with BBT posts. For further information please click here
