Course aim

To provide registered Dental Nurses with the knowledge and additional skills necessary to safely apply fluoride varnish in a community or dental practice based setting as a caries control measure, in accordance with the GDC Scope of Practice document, DBOH and NHS PCC guidance.

Course outcomes

  • Understand the diversity of patient groups
  • Record and interpret a comprehensive MH

  • Maintain contemporaneous and comprehensive patient records

  • Demonstrate the ability to make appropriate referrals to other DHCPs

  • Outline the importance of OHI and Dietary Advice.

  • State the context in which fluoride varnish may be used as a caries control measure (DBOH)

  • State the limitations and contraindications that may prevent/limit its use.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the environmental conditions in which fluoride varnish is best applied

  • Demonstrate competent use of appropriate equipment and materials relating to the procedure

Course structure

Day 1: Core of Knowledge

Day 1 is designed to ensure that Registered Dental Nurses have the necessary underpinning knowledge and skills to undertake training in the following areas.

  • Topical Fluoride for both children and adults – your chosen pathway
  • Clinical Photography
  • Plaque and Debris scoring
  • Impression Taking
  • Removing sutures

Days 2 & 3: Knowledge & Practical Skills

Days 2 and 3 are designed to provide the knowledge and practical skills required in association with delivering better oral health and the application of Fluoride varnish, for children and the elderly in a variety of settings.

 

Day 4: Assessment

Day 4 will consist of practical (Objective Structured Clinical Assessment (OSCE) and written assessments. You will also be required to complete a Practical Logbook which will be completed following Day 3 and submitted by no later than Day 4 of the training programme.

There are 4 mandatory classroom sessions.

Day 2: Wednesday 21st September 2016 (09:30am – 16:30pm)

Day 3: Wednesday 16th November 2016 (09:30am – 16:30pm)

Day 4 : Wednesday 18th January 2017 (13:00pm – 16:30pm)

 

Mandatory Requirements

  • Dental Nurse GDC registration
  • Suitable professional indemnity
  • Evidence of recent Infection Control & Medical Emergency training CPD (last 12 months)
  • DBS/CRB confirmation
  • Written consent from a GDC GDP willing to supervise you through the Scope of Practice programme
  • Access to a computer and the Internet

Course Fees


Health Education England working across Kent, Surrey and Sussex have agreed to subsidise the cost of the course for all eligible applicants working within the Kent, Surrey and Sussex region.

The registration fee is £50.00 (non-refundable), cheques are to be made payable to HEALTH EDUCATION ENGLAND and submitted by 29th July 2016.
