Dental Nurse Registration

Since 1st August 2008 all dental nurses working in the UK must be registered with the GDC.

Registerable Qualifications for Dental Nurses

The GDC website provides information regarding the Dental Nurse Qualifications recognised for entry to the Register.  Please follow the link for more information

Dental Nurse Training

Prior to enrolling with a course provider, the trainee dental nurse must ensure that the training course leads to a GDC recognised registerable qualification. In relation to trainee dental nurses, the GDC states that:

  • The trainee must begin their programme within two years of commencing employment.
  • The trainee should achieve their award, or qualification, within the normal duration of the course or up to one year after the expected course completion date.

It is also a requirement for the trainee dental nurse to receive a structured Induction programme at their workplace. The Induction programme should include training regarding patient safety and confidentiality, infection control, the protection of vulnerable children and adults and how to deal with medical emergencies.

It is vitally important that the trainee dental nurse must not undertake exposure prone procedures until the relevant course of vaccinations have been provided. Evidence of this must be logged.

During the length of a dental nurse training programme, it is normal practice for a named GDC registrant to take responsibility for supervising the trainee dental nurse in conjunction with other named GDC registered witnesses. The trainee dental nurse and the employer work together to ensure that a logbook of evidence is maintained to demonstrate a record of training.

Foundation Degree in Advanced Dental Nursing

Are you ready to enhance your career in dental nursing?

HEE LaSE currently provides the Foundation Degree in Advance Dental Nursing which commences each year in September. The course is designed to equip dental nurses with the learning skills and competence acquisition within the limits of their existing GDC Scope of Practice.  It enables qualified dental nurses to achieve academic results at foundation degree level, and extend their professional skills in Oral Health Education and Topical Fluoride Application.  The programme explicitly aims to equip dental nurses with the skills necessary for a satisfying and enduring career.

Please note that the FdSc in Advanced Dental Nursing is currently being restructured into a one year apprenticeship course, followed by a one year Foundation Degree top-up course and new intakes have been paused until after the relaunch. This is currently likely to take place after Summer 2018.

Due to organisational restructuring, in line with the NHS's Comprehnesive Spending Review, all new intakes are currently set to be managed by the team at Thames Valley, through Health Education England South.

Further information will be publicised once it becomes available.
